4D Composite Index · Methodologyv1.3

Updated: 2026-11-07 | Scope: all model scores and leaderboards on i4d.net | Live score API: /api/models (every model carries a fourd object) | 中文

1. Index Positioning & Practical Guidance

Focus: the 4D Composite Index is a decision index for model selection and production adoption — it answers not "which model is the strongest" but "which model is most worth using in production right now". Capability (D1) leads with the largest weight at 40%, while cost, ecosystem and reliability each weigh 20%: a call that is powerful yet expensive, unstable or hard to integrate does not make a good choice.

1.1 What it informs

1.2 How it differs from benchmark leaderboards (e.g. AA)

AA Intelligence Index etc.4D Composite Index
Question answeredHow capable is the model (single-dimension eval)Is it worth using, fast to integrate, stable (composite decision)
Signal mixMeasured on a standardized task suiteBenchmark results + official pricing + ecosystem metadata + live probes
Time policySnapshot at evaluation timeUpdated weekly; benchmarks older than 180 days are auto-dropped
ComparabilityRelative rank within the evaluated setAbsolute-scale scores, independent of the listing roster

The two are upstream/downstream rather than competing: authoritative benchmark results such as AA feed the D1 capability dimension, and 4D adds price, ecosystem and reliability signals on top to form a decision-ready composite score.

2. Design Principles

3. Total Score & Weights

Total = WD1·Capability + WD2·Cost + WD3·Ecosystem + WD4·Reliability, each dimension an integer 0–100.

DimNameDefault weightWhat it measures
D1Capability40%How strong the model is (objective measurements first)
D2Cost20%What a call costs (free = 100)
D3Ecosystem20%Fast to integrate, easy to switch (deployment readiness)
D4Reliability20%Stability and speed over the last 30 days

4. D1 Capability: Benchmarks + Metadata Prior

Capability = 75% × normalized benchmark + 25% × metadata prior (missing signals are dropped and weights renormalized over what is available).

4.1 Multi-source benchmark fusion (v1.3)

4.2 Metadata prior

5. D2 Cost: Absolute Price Percentile within Unit Bands

Cost = 1 − priceScore, where priceScore = log1p(effective USD price) ÷ log1p(unit price band). Free models always score 100; prices at or above the band approach 0, independent of the roster.

5.1 Effective unit price

5.2 Unit price bands (USD, log-scale full percentile)

Billing unitBandAnchor rationale
Per million tokens$30GPT-class flagship avg input/output tier
Per image$0.25gpt-image high-quality tier
Per video second$0.50Mainstream flagship per-second video price
Per generation$10Per-request video flagship tier
Per minute$0.05Audio / realtime per-minute

Bands are reviewed quarterly against official pricing pages; the derived value leaderboard = (capability + 0.2) ÷ (price percentile + 0.2), normalized within the list — it does not enter the total score.

6. D3 Ecosystem: Integration / Deployment Readiness

Ecosystem = 30%×API compatibility + 30%×production features + 20%×spec coverage + 20%×supply redundancy. Uses only static catalog metadata, mutually exclusive with D4 runtime probe data.

7. D4 Reliability: Wilson Lower Bound + Small-Sample Shrinkage (v1.3)

Reliability = w × (70%×availability lower bound + 30%×latency score) + (1−w) × 0.5

10. Citation & Feedback

All scores are recomputable via the public API: GET /api/models (each entry includes the fourd object and its mv version); data changes can be subscribed via the RSS change feed. If you find pricing or benchmark errors, feedback through the site channels is welcome — verified corrections will be announced in the change feed.
